Who Needs IVF?
Every infertility Doctor makes it his mission and goal to treat their patients based on their specific diagnosis and the most efficient and cost effective way to achieve the goal of pregnancy. Not everyone needs IVF. IVF is perhaps the best way to treat infertility. Depending on the cause of infertility IVF may be the first-line of treatment. IVF in other cases is recommended when more conservative treatment options fail.
Common reasons to undergo IVF:
Male Factor Infertility:
With today’s technology treating severe male factor infertility is now tenable. By using ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) we can utilize even the smallest amounts of sperm to achieve fertilization and pregnancy. This can be used even with men who have had a vasectomy done.
Anovulation:
Anovulation (lack of ovulation) can often be treated with less aggressive forms of fertility treatment. However, some patients may require IVF if those treatments fail.
Fallopian Tubes:
If the fallopian tubes are severely damaged or blocked and are not amenable to surgical repair then IVF is the only treatment modality.
Endometriosis:
Although medical and surgical therapies are the mainstay of therapy, in some patients with severe endometriosis IVF may be the only treatment option.
Unexplained Infertility:
Some patients after extensive evaluations will be diagnosed with unexplained infertility. Approximately 20% of patients will have no clear diagnosis for infertility. IVF is often used to treat these patients especially if conservative methods of treatment are not successful.
PGD/CGH (genetic testing):
patients that choose or require genetic testing of their embryos must undergo IVF for this testing to be performed. PGD/CGH is often used for the diagnosis of patients at risk for cystic fibrosis, thalassemia, sickle cell disease or any other genetic condition. PGD/CGH is also used for sex selection, prevention of recurrent miscarriages as well as failure of previous IVF cycles.
